Etymology

FTW mostly likely originates from the popular American game show Hollywood Squares. Hollywood Squares is a Tic-Tac-Toe variant where two contestants take turns answering questions with the help of C-List celebrities. The active contestant picks one of nine celebrities on the Tic-Tac-Toe board to answer a question, then must decide if the celebrity's answer is correct. If the player is right, they get the square. The first player to get three squares in a line wins. A player who is going for their third square in the line is announced as trying the square "for the win". A player who is attemping to thwart such an effort is announced as trying the square "for the block". Stalemates are not allowed on Hollywood Squares. If a three-in-a-row wins becomes impossible, the first player to take five squares wins.
