The emoticon was created during a time when tensions flared and people were getting upset at comments made in jest. Syd created the icon to ease these tensions, but it ended up making things worse. In the two weeks following its debut, THIS IS A FUCKING JOKE became the most popular emoticon on the forums. As the chaos on the forums grew ever more chaotic, Syd and the moderators were forced to lay the smacketh down and things got better. The emoticon was never disabled, and it is still used on rare occasions.
