Beginning in the eighth season, the episodes began being hit or miss.  However, in the ninth season, the bad episodes outnumbered the good episodes for the first time.  Notably, the season began with what is arguably the worst Simpsons episode ever, "The Principal and the Pauper" where we learned that Seymour Skinner wasn't really Seymour Skinner but an imposter.  Since then, the show has devolved into a shadow of its former self, repeating plotlines such as Homer and Marge having marital problems, or Homer and Lisa learning to understand each other better.  Meanwhile, its social commentary has lost all meaning, as the show [[South Park]] has taken its place in that category.
