The Second Singer Effect is what takes place when a replacement singer takes their respective band to a new degree of fame not reached by their predecessor.


Notable Second Singers

  • Brian Johnson in AC/DC
  • Sammy Hagar in Van Halen - brought the band to a new commercial height, though less beloved to fans than David Lee Roth.
  • Ronnie James Dio in Black Sabbath - has as big a following as Ozzy did in the band.
  • Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden
  • David Gilmour in Pink Floyd - technically not a lead singer, but the band had far more success with him than with Syd Barrett.
  • Phil Anselmo in Pantera
