The 1989 Grammys Fiasco is one of the most famous examples of how bullshit the Grammys really are.

At the 1989 Grammy Awards, a new award entitled "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental" was presented. It was widely believed that Metallica's ...And Justice For All would hands-down take the award, with Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood taking a close second place. Instead, Jethro Tull won the award. Jethro Tull hadn't released anything worth mention in a good 20 years at that point, and their lead singer plays the flute.

There was massive backlash, resulting in Metallica winning the award the following year. In their acceptance speech, the band thanked Jethro Tull for not putting out an album that year.

This entire debacle can be summed up in one thought: Nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts, Metallica got screwed.
