Gemstone III was a MUD. More specifically it is a text based D&D style MMO game.
It used to be free if you had an AOL account and then separated and became its own independent game.
The game was well written and was a fantastic way to deplete one's life energy into a computer. While it lacked graphics it did not lack immersion.
The game's undoing was its lack of change over time. While the game technically still exists, it has been upgraded to a new version (still text only), it's user base is a small fraction of what it once was.
